Saturday the 12th April 2008 marked the official end of a 13 month redevelopment of the Palmco Display Garden in Kerikeri.

The original gardens having been in existence for 12 years have undergone an amazing facelift that is not only a display of Palmco’s wonderful range of Palms and sub-tropical, but a destination to be used for parties, weddings, conferences and more. Open to the public it could be a journey of minutes or hours through the gardens.

Speaking of parties – of course one was held to celebrate the opening with guests enjoying local food and wines, soothing jazz sounds from Bob Jones & the Budapest Swing Quintet and of course the renowned Northland weather! But the cold, damp snap that arrived on the Saturday didn’t deter anyone from attending or enjoying themselves.

The entrance to the gardens is through a large indoor tropical garden a unique feature of the new gardens. The impressive Kauri sculpture ‘Tane Mahuta’ stands at the other entrance of the tropical house and beyond that the path meanders down a palm lined avenue. Other features of the garden are the petanque area, dry riverbed incorporating a fire pit which became a favourite gathering area as the light faded on Saturday. Secluded spots found by following the numerous little pathways are dotted throughout the gardens and a large grassed area in front of the pond ideal for events and picnics. Memories of the Supreme Award winning garden at the 2007 Ellerslie International Flower Show appear such as the unique iron fence and gazebo. The garden also features lighting making it ideal for evening functions or tours.

Words cannot adequately describe the gardens – it is something you will need to experience for yourself.
